Kelvin Kiptum Cheruiyot (2 December 1999 – 11 February 2024) was a remarkable Kenyan long-distance runner and one of the fastest marathoners in history. In 2023, he broke the marathon world record at the Chicago Marathon, setting a time of 2:00:35, marking a major milestone in the sport. His legacy lives on as one of the most promising athletes, having won all three marathons he participated in, with two being World Marathon Majors (WMM).

Despite his meteoric rise in athletics, Kiptum tragically passed away in a car crash on 11 February 2024. His untimely death, just days after his world record was ratified, shocked the global athletics community. In this article, we explore Kiptum’s life, career, and the impact he left on the sport.

Early Life and Career Beginnings

Born on 2 December 1999 in Chepsamo village in Marakwet District, Kenya, Kiptum grew up in a high-altitude region that would later become a breeding ground for long-distance runners. Raised in the Rift Valley, Kiptum started his running journey at an early age, herding cattle and running barefoot along trails. By 2013, at the age of 13, he began serious training in athletics, eventually making a name for himself in local competitions.

His first notable achievement came in 2013, when Kiptum finished 10th in his debut half marathon at the Family Bank Eldoret Half Marathon. Over the following years, his dedication paid off, and he consistently improved his times, culminating in his first international competition in 2019 at the Lisbon Half Marathon, where he finished fifth with a personal best time of 59:54.

Breaking Marathon Records

Kiptum’s breakthrough moment came in 2022 at the Valencia Marathon, where he stunned the athletics world by completing the marathon in 2:01:53, the fourth-fastest marathon time ever at the time. This victory not only marked a personal best but also set a course record and cemented Kiptum as one of the most promising marathoners.

In April 2023, he participated in the London Marathon, running the second-fastest marathon in history with a time of 2:01:25, just 16 seconds shy of the world record. But it was in October 2023, at the Chicago Marathon, where Kiptum truly etched his name in history. His time of 2:00:35 set a new world record, surpassing the previous record held by Eliud Kipchoge.

Kiptum’s world record was ratified by World Athletics on 6 February 2024, just five days before his untimely death.

Training Regimen and Legacy

Kiptum’s success in the marathon was partly attributed to his rigorous training schedule. Under the guidance of Gervais Hakizimana, Kiptum trained extensively in Chepkorio and Kerio Valley, both high-altitude regions known for producing world-class runners. His training included long runs, track sessions, and fartlek workouts, with a weekly mileage of 250-280 km.

His remarkable ability to run negative splits—where the second half of his marathon time is faster than the first—was a key feature of his race strategy. This was evident in his world record performance, where he completed the second half of the Chicago Marathon a minute faster than the first.

Kiptum’s career achievements and record-breaking performances will forever influence the world of marathon running. His death has left a profound void in the athletics world.

Tragic Passing

On 11 February 2024, Kelvin Kiptum and his coach Gervais Hakizimana tragically lost their lives in a car accident in Kaptagat, Kenya, a well-known training hub for long-distance runners. According to local police, Kiptum lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a tree, leading to the fatal incident.

The news of his death sent shockwaves through the athletics community, with tributes pouring in from around the world. World Athletics President Sebastian Coe expressed his condolences, stating that Kiptum’s legacy would be remembered as one of greatness. Eliud Kipchoge, the previous marathon world record holder, also mourned the loss, acknowledging Kiptum’s potential to achieve even more in his career.

Funeral and Tributes

Kelvin Kiptum was laid to rest on 23 February 2024 at his farm in Naiberi, following a funeral ceremony attended by family, friends, and prominent figures in the athletics world, including Sebastian Coe and Kenyan President William Ruto.

In a tribute at the 2024 Chicago Marathon, Ruth Chepng’etich dedicated her world record run to Kiptum, reflecting the respect and admiration the running community had for him.

Achievements and Personal Bests

Kelvin Kiptum’s marathon achievements include:

  • World Marathon Record: 2:00:35 (Chicago, 2023)
  • London Marathon: 2:01:25 (2023)
  • Valencia Marathon: 2:01:53 (2022)
  • Half Marathon: 58:42 (Valencia, 2020)

Kiptum’s personal bests and world record will continue to inspire future generations of runners. His achievements reflect the sheer dedication and talent that defined his career, even though it was tragically cut short.
