John Winston Katende, widely known as John W. Katende, is a distinguished Ugandan lawyer, senior counsel, and businessman with a career spanning over five decades. Born on 13 January 1945 in Buwambo village, Wakiso District, Uganda, Katende has made significant contributions to Uganda’s legal, academic, and public service sectors. His legal career and influence as a prominent figure in Uganda’s history have left a lasting mark on the legal profession, constitutional development, and business practices in East Africa.
Katende’s diverse career includes positions in both the private and public sectors, including his long-standing role as the Attorney General for the Buganda Kingdom. His impact is also seen in his academic work, business ventures, and mentoring of numerous lawyers and public servants who have gone on to hold prominent positions in Uganda and the region.
Early Life and Education
John Katende’s early years were marked by a unique upbringing that exposed him to both Ugandan culture and the intricacies of public service. Born to Yokana Drake Kakembo, a local chief, and Eseza Nalumansi Baagala Kakembo, Katende was introduced to the importance of leadership from a young age. His name, “Winston,” was inspired by Winston Churchill, while “John” came from his father’s name.
Katende’s education began at Aggrey Memorial School before his family moved to Kalambi village near Buloba, where he continued his primary education at Bira Primary School. He later attended Ngogwe Primary School in Kyaggwe County, where his maternal uncle, Yona Kaweesa, was a teacher. He progressed through King’s College Budo and Lubiri Secondary School, where he completed his O-Level education. His growing interest in drama and the performing arts also began during this period, alongside a budding passion for law.
In 1966, Katende enrolled at the University of East Africa, Dar es Salaam College, studying law. He graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) in 1968. His time at university was marked by the presence of future political and legal figures, including Yoweri Museveni and Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi. Katende’s academic journey continued at Harvard Law School, where he earned a Master of Laws (LL.M) in 1970, becoming one of the first East African students to graduate from the prestigious institution.
Legal Career and Public Service Contributions
After returning to Uganda in 1970, Katende began his career as a lecturer at Makerere University Law School, teaching courses such as Introduction to Law and Law of Business Associations. This role laid the foundation for his future endeavors in the legal profession. In the 1970s, Katende co-founded the law firm Katende, Ssempebwa & Co. Advocates (KATS), which became one of Uganda’s most respected law firms.
His professional career spans over 50 years, with significant contributions to corporate and commercial litigation, mediation, arbitration, and constitutional law. Katende’s expertise in banking, finance, international trade, and mergers and acquisitions has made him a prominent figure in Uganda’s legal and business communities.
In addition to his legal practice, Katende served as Honorary Attorney General and Chief Legal Advisor to the Kingdom of Buganda for over 13 years. He also chaired the Buganda Constitutional Review Commission, playing a crucial role in the legal framework of the Kingdom. One of the most notable moments of his career was when he administered the oath during the coronation of Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II on 31 July 1993.
Academic Work and Mentorship
While balancing legal practice, Katende was also a key figure in legal education. As a lecturer at Makerere University, he mentored several generations of legal professionals, many of whom have gone on to hold prominent positions in Uganda’s government, judiciary, and private sector. Katende authored The Law of Business Associations in East and Central Africa, a landmark legal text that became widely used in universities across the region.
Among his students are notable figures such as Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, Bart Katureebe, Fredrick Ruhindi, and Amos Twinomujuni, who later became influential figures in Uganda’s political and judicial landscapes.
Business Ventures
Apart from his legal career, Katende is also known for his entrepreneurial ventures. He is the founder of The Ebonies, a popular Ugandan drama group established in 1977. The group has played an important role in promoting Ugandan culture and performing arts, making a significant impact on local entertainment.
Katende also founded Aristoc Bookshop, one of Uganda’s leading book retail businesses. Through Aristoc, Katende contributed to the growth of Uganda’s literary culture by making educational and recreational books widely available across the country.

Over the course of his career, John Katende has received numerous accolades recognizing his contributions to Uganda’s legal and public sectors. His achievements were highlighted in 2023 when he received the Distinguished Order of the Source of the Nile, one of Uganda’s highest national honors, for his outstanding service to the nation.

Personal Life
Katende is married to Elizabeth Bigirimana, and the couple celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in 2023 with a special thanksgiving service in Kampala. His personal life, marked by dedication to both family and professional pursuits, reflects his balanced approach to public service and community development.
