Booker Ngesa Omole is a Kenyan political activist and Marxist–Leninist organizer who serves as the General Secretary of the Communist Party Marxist–Kenya (CPMK). He assumed office in November 2024 following the ideological and organizational transformation of the Communist Party of Kenya into a explicitly Marxist–Leninist formation. Omole is widely associated with left-wing activism in Kenya, particularly movements centered on workers’ rights, anti-imperialism, and opposition to neoliberal economic policies.
Before becoming general secretary, Omole held senior leadership roles within the Communist Party of Kenya, including National Vice Chairperson. In these capacities, he played a significant role in redefining the party’s ideological orientation, mass mobilization strategy, and internal cadre development. His political activities have placed him at the center of Kenya’s contemporary leftist discourse, often attracting both public attention and state scrutiny.
Omole has also been a frequent participant in national political debates, appearing in public forums and media discussions on issues such as corruption, inequality, police violence, and international political economy. His activism has coincided with a period of heightened political tension in Kenya, marked by youth-led protests, debates over IMF-backed fiscal policies, and renewed contestation over civic space.
Early life and education
Booker Omole was born in Gem Constituency, Siaya County, a region historically associated with political engagement and labor activism. He pursued higher education at the University of Nairobi, enrolling in the Faculty of Engineering. During his university years, Omole became active in student leadership and political organizing, experiences that shaped his later ideological development.
His involvement in campus politics exposed him to socialist thought and grassroots mobilization. During this period, he participated in youth-oriented political formations that emphasized class analysis, economic justice, and collective action. These early engagements laid the foundation for his later involvement in organized left-wing politics.
Entry into organized politics
Omole’s formal political trajectory began within the Social Democratic Party of Kenya (SDP), where he worked on youth mobilization and policy advocacy. In 2019, he was involved in the reorganization of the SDP into the Communist Party of Kenya, a transition that marked a decisive ideological shift toward Marxist–Leninist principles.
As part of the CPK leadership, Omole argued that Kenya’s social and economic challenges required systemic transformation rather than incremental reform. He emphasized the centrality of workers, peasants, and marginalized communities in political struggle, advocating for mass-based organizing and ideological clarity.
Role within the Communist Party of Kenya
Within the Communist Party of Kenya, Omole rose to the position of National Vice Chairperson. In this role, he was involved in coordinating protests, political education programs, and alliances with labor and youth movements. He became particularly visible during nationwide demonstrations against rising costs of living and austerity measures.
Omole also contested elective office in the 2012 and 2017 general elections, though without electoral success. Preparations for a 2022 candidacy were disrupted by administrative and procedural challenges, including disputes related to nomination processes. These experiences reinforced his critique of Kenya’s electoral and institutional frameworks.
Transition to Communist Party Marxist–Kenya
In late 2024, the Communist Party of Kenya reconstituted itself as the Communist Party Marxist–Kenya, signaling a renewed emphasis on ideological discipline and revolutionary strategy. Omole was appointed General Secretary, becoming the party’s principal administrative and ideological leader.
Under his leadership, CPMK adopted key policy documents, including a national program outlining a proposed path toward a socialist transformation of Kenya. The party also revised its constitution, restructured its youth and women’s leagues, and introduced internal mechanisms for ideological assessment and cadre development.
Ideological positions and writings
Omole identifies as a Marxist–Leninist and argues that capitalism is structurally incapable of addressing Kenya’s inequality, unemployment, and underdevelopment. His political writings and speeches emphasize class struggle, state power, and resistance to imperialism.
Through party publications and public commentary, Omole has critiqued what he describes as “bourgeois politics,” contending that mainstream political competition in Kenya primarily serves elite interests. He has also expressed solidarity with global leftist movements and advocated for South–South cooperation as an alternative to Western-dominated economic systems.
Legal controversies and court cases
Omole has been involved in several high-profile legal cases connected to his activism and public statements.
In 2014, during a period of intense student political rivalry at the University of Nairobi, Omole and other student leaders were arrested following disturbances linked to student elections. He was charged with multiple offenses, including possession of unlawful weapons. The case concluded with his acquittal after the prosecution failed to present witnesses.
In a separate civil matter, Omole was sued for defamation by Elisha Ochieng Odhiambo, the Member of Parliament for Gem Constituency. The case arose from allegations Omole made concerning the alleged misuse of public funds. In 2021, the High Court ruled in favor of Odhiambo, awarding damages and issuing a permanent injunction restricting further statements on the matter.
Arrest, detention, and state scrutiny
In September 2024, Omole was arrested at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport while en route to Beijing. His detention drew criticism from leftist organizations and human rights advocates, who characterized the arrest as politically motivated.
The Communist Party condemned the action, asserting that Omole was traveling on official party business. Omole himself has been a vocal critic of the government of William Ruto, accusing it of authoritarian practices and suppression of dissent. He was later released, though subsequent police actions, including raids, intensified concerns about harassment of political activists.
Violent attacks and security concerns
In 2025, Omole reported surviving two violent incidents. In January, armed individuals reportedly broke into his residence, an incident the party described as an assassination attempt. In April, a vehicle carrying Omole and other party members was shot at along a major highway.
Party officials alleged state complicity or negligence in both incidents, claims denied by police authorities. These events heightened international attention on the safety of left-wing activists in Kenya.
Public engagement and media presence
Omole is a frequent commentator on Kenyan television and public forums, where he discusses governance, corruption, labor rights, and global political economy. He has appeared on major Kenyan broadcasters and regularly addresses rallies, academic forums, and political gatherings.
He is also an outspoken critic of Western foreign policy in Africa and has expressed interest in alternative development models, including aspects of China’s state-led economic approach. His views have positioned him as a polarizing but influential figure in Kenya’s contemporary political landscape.
Political significance
Booker Omole represents a new generation of explicitly ideological left-wing leadership in Kenya, operating in a political environment traditionally dominated by personality-based and ethnically aligned parties. His activism reflects broader debates over inequality, youth unemployment, and the role of the state in economic development.
While supporters view him as a principled advocate for social justice, critics regard his politics as radical and confrontational. Regardless, his prominence underscores the re-emergence of organized Marxist politics in Kenya’s public life.
