Raila Amolo Odinga, a towering figure in Kenyan politics, made his mark as the second Prime Minister of Kenya, serving from 2008 to 2013. Known for his unyielding political campaigns and for challenging Kenya’s political elite, Odinga’s life has been defined by his relentless pursuit of democracy, justice, and economic transformation in Kenya. This article explores his journey, from his early life to his role in shaping modern Kenyan politics, including his repeated presidential bids and leadership roles in various political coalitions.

Early Life and Education

Born on 7 January 1945 in Maseno, Nyanza Province, Raila Odinga is the son of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Kenya’s first vice president. Raised in a politically active family, Raila’s path seemed destined for leadership. He attended Maranda High School and later moved to Germany, where he studied at Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg. He earned a master’s degree in mechanical engineering in 1970.

While in Germany, Raila became known for his involvement in smuggling goods between East and West Berlin, showcasing his resourcefulness early in life.

Political Career and Presidential Bids

Raila Odinga’s political career began in 1992 when he won the Langata Constituency parliamentary seat. He became a significant figure in Kenya’s transition to multi-party democracy, becoming the Deputy Director of Elections for the Forum for the Restoration of Democracy (FORD), a movement he co-founded.

Odinga has run for president five times:

  1. 1997: Finished third as the National Development Party (NDP) candidate.
  2. 2007: Ran under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and alleged electoral fraud after a controversial election result.
  3. 2013: Lost to Uhuru Kenyatta in the general elections.
  4. 2017: Filed a petition after the election results were disputed, leading to a historic annulment by the Supreme Court of Kenya.
  5. 2022: Again contested but lost to William Ruto, marking his fifth unsuccessful attempt.

Prime Minister of Kenya (2008–2013)

Odinga became the Prime Minister of Kenya after the 2007-2008 post-election violence, which led to a power-sharing agreement brokered by former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan. The agreement was intended to restore peace and national unity following the disputed election results. During this time, Odinga focused on national reforms, including pushing for a new constitution and devolution of power.

His tenure as Prime Minister was marked by both cooperation and tension with President Mwai Kibaki. Despite these challenges, Odinga’s leadership was instrumental in Kenya’s transition into a more decentralized government structure under the 2010 Constitution.

Political Positions and Ideology

Odinga’s political ideology has often been associated with social democracy and economic reform. He has been a strong advocate for devolution, democratization, and constitutional reforms. His support for a parliamentary system and later a presidential system with devolved power helped shape Kenya’s governance model today.

On social issues, Odinga has expressed conservative views on topics like LGBT rights, where he stated that same-sex marriage is illegal under the Kenyan Constitution. He has also called for the suspension of taxes on essential goods to alleviate the burden on the poor, showcasing his focus on social justice.

The Building Bridges Initiative (BBI)

Following the 2017 election, Odinga entered into a political handshake with President Uhuru Kenyatta, which led to the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI). The BBI aimed to foster unity, address political divisions, and reform Kenya’s governance structures. While the initiative was widely hailed, the Supreme Court ruled it unconstitutional in 2022, putting an end to the proposed changes.

Role in African Politics

Beyond Kenya, Raila Odinga has been a key figure in African diplomacy. In 2018, he was appointed the African Union High Representative for Infrastructure Development. During his tenure, he worked on advancing Africa’s infrastructure development and trade integration. Despite being defeated in his bid for African Union Commission Chairperson in 2025, Odinga continued to advocate for African unity and economic integration.

Legacy and Influence

Raila Odinga’s legacy is deeply woven into the fabric of Kenya’s democratic evolution. As a figurehead of opposition politics, he championed the rights of marginalized communities and sought reforms that would transform Kenya into a more democratic and inclusive nation. His influence continues to shape the political and social landscape, as he remains a pivotal figure in Kenya’s political dialogue.

Personal Life

Odinga is married to Ida Odinga, and they have four children. He has often been a controversial figure, with his political life marked by both admiration and criticism. Despite this, his passion for Kenya’s development and his advocacy for the rights of the oppressed have earned him widespread recognition.

Death and Funeral

Raila Odinga passed away on 15 October 2025 at the age of 80, while undergoing medical treatment in India. His death was met with national mourning, with millions of Kenyans and world leaders paying tribute to his leadership. His body was brought back to Kenya, where he was accorded a state funeral, and buried in his home in Bondo.

Conclusion

Raila Odinga’s political career has been defined by his unyielding pursuit of democracy, reform, and economic justice. While his attempts to become president were unsuccessful, his impact on Kenya’s governance and political culture remains profound. As a symbol of resilience, Odinga’s contributions to Kenyan politics and African unity will continue to be remembered for years to come.
