The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) is the national governing body responsible for overseeing all aspects of football in Kenya. Established in 1960, FKF is instrumental in managing the Kenyan Premier League, the Kenyan Women’s Premier League, and various national football teams. The federation works to grow the sport at both professional and grassroots levels across the country.

History and Evolution of FKF

Founding and Affiliations

FKF was founded in 1960, initially affiliating with FIFA (1960) and later joining CAF (1961), and CECAFA (1973). These affiliations positioned FKF as the key player in the growth and regulation of football within Kenya and the broader African and global football communities.

Transition from Football Kenya Limited to FKF

In November 2011, Football Kenya Limited (FKL) was disbanded and replaced by the Football Kenya Federation (FKF). Despite the organizational changes, many executive positions from FKL remained occupied by the same individuals, ensuring continuity in leadership.

Leadership and Key Figures

President Hussein Mohammed

Under the leadership of Hussein Mohammed, FKF has taken significant steps towards improving the structure and financial sustainability of Kenyan football. He was appointed as the President of FKF, bringing a renewed focus on football development across the country.

Vice-President McDonald Mariga

McDonald Mariga, a former Kenyan international footballer, holds the role of Vice-President within FKF. His experience both as a player and in management has added valuable insight into the federation’s decision-making process.

General Secretary Harold Ndege

Harold Ndege serves as the General Secretary, ensuring the smooth administration and operations of FKF. His responsibilities include overseeing the day-to-day functions and facilitating communication between FKF and other football organizations.

Achievements and Milestones

The Rise of Kenyan Women’s Football

One of the significant achievements for FKF came in April 2016 when the Kenya women’s national football team, the Harambee Starlets, qualified for their first-ever AFCON tournament, which was held in Cameroon. This marked a historical moment for Kenyan women’s football.

Corporate Partnerships

FKF signed a 5-year partnership with SportPesa in June 2016, securing financial support for various initiatives. The partnership boosted FKF’s efforts to improve the infrastructure and resources available to the Kenyan football community.

Physiotherapist Investment Scheme

In October 2023, FKF launched an investment scheme aimed at improving the technical capacity of physiotherapists in the Kenyan women’s leagues, reflecting its commitment to advancing women’s football and ensuring the proper care and treatment of players.

Challenges Faced by FKF

Corruption and Mismanagement

During the presidency of Sam Nyamweya (2011–2015), FKF became associated with financial mismanagement and corruption, which severely affected the development of football in Kenya. Allegations of embezzlement of funds and the lack of financial support for the national team were a source of public discontent. For instance, internationally based players like Victor Wanyama often had to pay for their own travel expenses to and from international matches.

Suspension and FIFA’s Intervention

In November 2022, FKF faced a suspension from FIFA after the Kenyan government disbanded the federation due to suspicions of corruption. The suspension was lifted in 2022 when the government reinstated FKF, a move that allowed the federation to continue its operations and improve transparency in Kenyan football governance.

Looking Ahead: FKF’s Future

With its leadership now focused on both men’s and women’s football, FKF continues to seek growth and stability. The federation has made progress in areas like youth development, infrastructure, and women’s football, but challenges such as funding and governance issues remain.

FKF’s focus on improving football management through training and partnerships, including its push to enhance physiotherapy services, indicates a bright future for Kenyan football on both the domestic and international stage.

Conclusion

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) plays a central role in shaping the future of football in Kenya. Despite facing challenges like corruption and financial difficulties, FKF has managed to achieve several significant milestones, particularly in the promotion of women’s football and the establishment of corporate partnerships. With the continued efforts of its leadership, FKF is poised to build a stronger, more competitive football culture in Kenya.
