Kenya, officially known as The Republic of Kenya, is located in East Africa. It has an estimated population of 38 million people and a total land area of 580,367 km². The country’s capital is Nairobi, one of Africa’s largest cities.

Geography of Kenya

Kenya is positioned on the Equator, in the Eastern Hemisphere, and is bordered by Uganda to the west, Ethiopia to the north, Tanzania to the south, Somalia to the east, and South Sudan to the northwest. Its coastline along the Indian Ocean spans 536 km.

Population of Kenya

Kenya’s population has been steadily increasing, with approximately 38.6 million people recorded in the 2019 census. By 2025, the population is expected to reach 9.46 million in the Mount Kenya region, which is an important cultural and political area in Kenya.

Administrative Divisions of Kenya

Kenya is divided into 47 counties, each with its own local government. Some of the major counties include Nairobi, Mombasa, Kiambu, and Kisumu. These counties play a vital role in the governance and economic activities of the country.

Economy of Kenya

Kenya’s economy is diversified, with agriculture being the backbone. The country produces large quantities of tea, coffee, and horticultural crops, along with dairy products. In 2024, Kenya’s GDP was estimated at $21.57 billion.

Agriculture, banking, tourism, and telecommunications are the key sectors. Nairobi, as the economic hub, has attracted a range of international investments.

Climate and Environment of Kenya

Kenya has a variety of climatic zones due to its geographical diversity. Coastal areas are tropical, while the Mount Kenya region experiences cooler temperatures. The country also boasts numerous national parks and reserves, which are home to diverse wildlife such as elephants, lions, and giraffes.

Culture of Kenya

Kenya has a rich and diverse cultural heritage. The country is home to over 40 ethnic groups, including the Kikuyu, Maasai, Luhya, and Kalenjin. Kenya’s culture is expressed through its music, art, food, and literature.

Kenyan cuisine features staple foods like ugali, sukuma, and nyama choma (grilled meat). The Mau Mau Uprising, political history, and independence movement are integral to Kenya’s identity.

Wildlife and Natural Resources

Kenya is known for its wildlife reserves such as Maasai Mara and Amboseli National Park, where visitors can witness the Great Migration. The country is also home to Mount Kenya, the second-highest mountain in Africa, and Lake Victoria, which lies along Kenya’s western border.

Transportation in Kenya

Kenya has an extensive transport network, including roads, railways, airports, and ports. Major cities like Nairobi and Mombasa are connected by well-maintained highways, while the Nairobi Railway links the coast to inland areas. Jomo Kenyatta International Airport is the busiest in East Africa.

Government and Politics of Kenya

Kenya operates under a presidential system of government, with the President of Kenya serving as both head of state and government. The country’s political structure is based on devolution, dividing Kenya into 47 counties.

Conclusion

Kenya’s rich cultural diversity, growing economy, and unique geography make it an essential country in East Africa. Whether you are interested in its vibrant culture, expansive wildlife, or growing economy, Kenya is a dynamic and beautiful nation that continues to play a key role in Africa’s development.
