Oburu Odinga, the leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), has made a bold statement, promising to lead his supporters to the promised land of Canaan. This metaphorical journey to prosperity will be modeled after Singapore’s remarkable transformation, according to Oburu. Speaking at the disbursement of NYOTA business funds in Kisumu, the ODM leader expressed his commitment to Kenya’s development under the leadership of President William Ruto, emphasizing that Kenya’s growth trajectory will mirror Singapore’s successful development model.
The event, held on January 2 at the Jomo Kenyatta Stadium in Mamboleo, saw over 8,000 youths from Kisumu, Homa Bay, and Siaya counties benefit from business support funds. The ceremony was graced by President Ruto, who has been working closely with ODM and its leadership since entering into a partnership with them. Oburu’s message of unity and transformation resonated with the crowd, as he outlined his vision for a prosperous Kenya.
Oburu Odinga: The Journey to Canaan
Oburu, reflecting on his political journey, emphasized that the ODM party’s efforts would continue with or without his brother, Raila Odinga, who passed away in October 2025. Since Raila’s passing, Oburu has assumed the mantle of ODM leadership and has pledged to uphold the party’s values. Oburu likened Kenya’s developmental journey to that of Singapore, suggesting that Kenya could follow in the footsteps of the city-state’s success, albeit with its unique set of circumstances.
The ODM leader stressed the importance of government inclusivity, particularly in regions like Luo Nyanza. He pointed out that residents in the region contribute to the country’s taxation system and, as such, are entitled to the same government resources as any other region. This rhetoric sharply contrasts with remarks made by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who had suggested that regions which did not vote for Ruto in 2022 should not receive government support.
The Significance of Singapore’s Model for Kenya
During his speech, Oburu mentioned that Kenya’s transformation, under President Ruto’s leadership, would take inspiration from Singapore’s growth. “We are starting from basic steps, just as Singapore did,” Oburu said, emphasizing that steady progress over time could lead to transformative results. By comparing Kenya’s potential to Singapore’s rapid development, Oburu painted an optimistic picture for the country’s future, with Ruto’s administration at the helm of that change.
The statement also comes as ODM moves away from the divisive tactics of some opposition factions. Oburu dismissed the idea of planned demonstrations by the United Opposition coalition, humorously suggesting that their efforts could learn from ODM, who has been known for its peaceful demonstrations in the past.
Looking Ahead: Luo Nyanza’s Role in Kenya’s Transformation
In his closing remarks, Oburu made it clear that Luo Nyanza’s political allegiance would lie with leaders who focus on transformation. “All our votes will go to those bringing change to Nyanza,” he said, signaling ODM’s continued support for President Ruto in the 2027 elections. With this pledge, Oburu has set the tone for ODM’s political strategy moving forward, focusing on development rather than divisiveness.
As Oburu Odinga continues to lead ODM, his commitment to both national unity and regional development stands firm. By promising to take his supporters to “Canaan through Singapore,” Oburu has created a powerful image of hope and progress for the people of Kenya.
