Nyandarua nurses strike has brought public health services to a standstill after healthcare workers walked out over the failure to implement a return-to-work formula. The strike, led by members of the Kenya National Union of Nurses, has triggered widespread disruption across public health facilities in Laikipia County.

The industrial action follows mounting frustration among nurses and midwives who accuse the county government of ignoring a 16-point agreement meant to resolve earlier disputes. As a result, patients across the region now face delays and limited access to essential medical services.

Strike Overview

Nurses and midwives, under the Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN), downed their tools and launched a strike citing the county government’s failure to honor a previously agreed return-to-work formula.

Union officials, led by chairperson Peter Ndimba and Branch Secretary Daniel Mungai, stated that the agreement had not been implemented despite earlier commitments. They emphasized that the strike would continue until all grievances are fully addressed.

Key Grievances Driving the Strike

The protesting nurses outlined several critical concerns that have remained unresolved. These include delayed promotions and confirmations, which have stalled career progression for many healthcare workers.

Additionally, staff shortages and a lack of essential medical tools have made working conditions increasingly difficult. Nurses also raised concerns over unpaid salary arrears and inadequate medical cover.

Other issues include failure to implement the 17-tier grading structure, denial of leave requests, and delays in approving further training opportunities. According to union leaders, these challenges have persisted despite previous negotiations.

Protests in Nyahururu

Healthcare workers staged peaceful demonstrations in Nyahururu, where they marched through the town chanting anti-government slogans and carrying placards.

The protests highlight growing tension between healthcare workers and county officials, as well as frustration over what the union describes as broken promises.

Impact on Health Services

The strike has severely affected public healthcare services across Laikipia County. Hospitals and clinics are now operating at minimal capacity, leaving many patients without access to timely care.

Emergency services have also been strained, raising concerns about the broader impact on public health if the strike continues.

County Government Response

Officials from the county government have acknowledged the concerns raised by the nurses but cited financial constraints as a major challenge.

Laikipia County Executive Committee Member for Health Services, Dr. Albert Wagura Taiti, stated that the administration has begun implementing some of the agreed recommendations, though progress has been slow.

He noted that several health workers had recently received confirmation letters for permanent and pensionable employment. According to him, ongoing human resource issues will be resolved over time.

Accountability Concerns

The union has criticized senior county officials, including Governor Joshua Irungu’s administration, County Secretary Wahome Koinange, and County Public Service Board Chair Macharia Gakiri.

Union leaders argue that these officials have failed to take decisive action to resolve the crisis, prolonging the standoff and worsening conditions in public health facilities.

Outlook

With both sides maintaining firm positions, there is no immediate resolution in sight. Nurses insist they will not return to work until their demands are met, while the county government continues to cite budgetary limitations.

The situation underscores ongoing challenges in Kenya’s devolved healthcare system, particularly around workforce management, funding, and policy implementation.
