The National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) is a fellowship of Protestant churches and Christian organizations in Kenya, established in 1913. NCCK is dedicated to promoting Christian unity and advocating for social justice, peace, and development in Kenya. With a motto of “For Wananchi,” meaning “For citizens” in Swahili, NCCK plays a significant role in advocating for the rights and well-being of the Kenyan people, particularly in the realms of social responsibility, public service, and political involvement.

History of NCCK

The roots of NCCK trace back to the early 20th century when Dr. Johann Ludwig Krapf, a German missionary, arrived in Kenya in 1844. His missionary work laid the foundation for the Christianization of Kenya and the subsequent rise of Christian denominations. Over the years, as the number of missionaries grew, a need for a unified church body arose. This led to several key developments:

  • 1909: A conference was held at Kijabe, setting the stage for the formation of a self-governing, self-supporting, and self-extending church in Kenya.
  • 1913: The first United Missionary Conference took place at Thogoto, Kikuyu, where nine missionary groups signed a constitution and established the Federation of Missions, which later evolved into the NCCK.
  • 1918: The organization was renamed the Alliance of Protestant Missions, reflecting its growing membership and broader focus.
  • 1924: The mission expanded beyond its original group to incorporate more African issues, particularly in health, education, and rehabilitation of soldiers.
  • 1943: With Kenya inching toward independence, the organization broadened its scope to include non-missionary Christian bodies, and it became the Christian Council of Kenya (CCK).
  • 1964: Following Kenya’s independence, the organization was renamed the National Christian Council of Kenya.
  • 1984: To reflect the organization’s transition from individual Christian membership to church-based membership, it became the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK).

Governance of the Council

The governance of NCCK is guided by its Constitution, which defines the supreme governing body as the General Assembly (GA). The GA meets once every three years and is supported by an Executive Committee, which convenes biannually. The committee is responsible for the strategic direction of the council, and it operates through two key sub-committees: the Programme Committee and the Finance and Administration Committee.

The day-to-day operations of the council are handled by a management team led by the General Secretary, who serves as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the council. Key officials of the NCCK include:

  • Chairman: Rev. Dr. Elias Otieno Agola
  • Vice Chairman: Bishop Dr. John Okinda
  • Honorary Treasurer: Mr. John Thiong’o
  • General Secretary: Rev. Canon Chris Kinyanjui Kamau
  • Deputy General Secretary: Pst. Sussie Ndanyi

This leadership structure ensures that the NCCK functions effectively in managing its activities and fulfilling its mission to serve the people of Kenya.

Mission and Impact

NCCK’s mission is rooted in its long-standing involvement in advocacy, social justice, public service, and national development. Over the years, the council has played a pivotal role in several key areas:

  • Political and Social Advocacy: NCCK has been an active voice in advocating for political reform, human rights, and social justice, particularly in times of political unrest. It has been involved in various peace-building efforts and national reconciliation initiatives.
  • Health and Education: Through partnerships with various organizations and governmental bodies, NCCK has been involved in addressing health and educational challenges, particularly in rural and marginalized communities.
  • Humanitarian Work: The council has also been at the forefront of providing humanitarian aid, especially in the aftermath of natural disasters and during periods of socio-political upheaval.

NCCK’s commitment to social justice and development aligns with its motto, “For Wananchi,” reflecting its dedication to the well-being of Kenyan citizens, particularly the marginalized and vulnerable.

Membership and Affiliations

NCCK has a diverse membership, which includes 50 churches and Christian organizations that work together to achieve common goals. The membership is divided into:
