Malaba is a town located in Teso North Sub-County within Busia County, Kenya. Situated on the Kenya-Uganda border, Malaba is a crucial point of entry and exit for goods and people between the two East African nations. The town is strategically positioned on the Nairobi-Kampala highway, making it an essential part of the Northern Corridor, which links several East African Community countries to the Indian Ocean port of Mombasa.

Location and Accessibility

Malaba sits approximately 129 kilometers (80 miles) west of Eldoret, the nearest large city, and around 438 kilometers (272 miles) northwest of Nairobi, Kenya’s capital. The coordinates of Malaba are 0°38′07″N, 34°16′31″E, and it stands at an elevation of 3,870 feet (1,180 meters) above sea level.

The town is an important transit point for both road and rail transport. The Bujumbura-Mombasa Road, also known as the Northern Corridor, passes through Malaba, connecting Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi to the port of Mombasa. Additionally, a meter-gauge railway operated by Rift Valley Railways crosses the border at Malaba, facilitating the movement of goods. The standard gauge railway from Mombasa is also expected to pass through Malaba, further boosting its strategic importance.

Population Growth and Demographics

As of the 2023 census, Malaba’s population stands at 12,303. This marks a significant growth from the 7,302 people recorded in the 1999 census. The town’s population has steadily increased over the years, driven by its importance as a commercial and border hub.

Border Crossing and Economic Activity

The town’s border crossing plays a vital role in trade between Kenya and Uganda. Thousands of truck drivers cross through Malaba every day, moving goods between the two countries. However, due to customs and loading procedures, many of these drivers spend hours or even days at the border, contributing to the bustling nature of the town.

The completion of a one-stop-border-crossing in 2016, linking Malaba, Kenya, and Malaba, Uganda, has greatly improved the efficiency of trade and customs processes. This development has helped streamline the movement of goods, reducing delays and fostering economic activity in the region.

Social and Economic Challenges

While the border crossing has undoubtedly boosted trade and commerce, it has also brought with it social challenges. The long wait times at the border often result in drivers engaging with commercial sex workers, a situation that has raised concerns in the area. The local authorities and organizations continue to address these issues as they work to balance the benefits of trade with the need to address public health and safety.

Conclusion

Malaba, Kenya, stands as a vital town on the Kenya-Uganda border, with significant implications for trade and transportation in the region. Its strategic location along the Northern Corridor and the completion of the one-stop-border-crossing have enhanced its role as a key economic hub. As the town’s population continues to grow, the continued development of infrastructure and public services will be essential to ensure that Malaba remains a thriving, sustainable border town for both Kenya and Uganda.
