The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has introduced an innovative WhatsApp chatbot service designed to simplify tax filing and other related services for Kenyans. Announced on Thursday, January 22, 2026, by KRA’s Commissioner-General Humphrey Wattaga, the service allows users to access 15 different KRA services via WhatsApp, 24/7, without needing to visit KRA offices.
This service is a significant step in digitizing tax management in Kenya. By saving the official KRA WhatsApp number (+254 711099999) and initiating a chat with “Hi” or “Menu,” users will be guided through a verification process. Once their identity is confirmed, the bot will display a range of services, including tax filing, PIN management, tax information queries, ETIMS invoicing, tax return assistance, and more.
The new WhatsApp service is part of KRA’s ongoing digital transformation. According to Wattaga, the chatbot provides a step-by-step guide on how individuals can file their tax returns via the iTax portal, offering an efficient and easy-to-follow process.
“We have 15 services that can now be accessed through our WhatsApp platform,” said Wattaga. “Additionally, we are incorporating artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data analytics into our tax management systems to further enhance our services.”
KRA Chairman Ndiriitu Muriithi also emphasized the importance of modernizing the authority’s IT systems. This technological shift aims to increase revenue collection efficiency and reduce reliance on paper-based processes. KRA has set an ambitious revenue target of Kshs 2.968 trillion for the financial year 2025/26, marking a 15.4% growth from the previous year.
This development follows the earlier announcement of a USSD service (*222#) introduced two weeks ago, which enables taxpayers to access KRA services using basic mobile phones, ensuring that more people, including those without smartphones, can participate in digital tax processes.
