The International School of Kenya (ISK) stands as a beacon of educational excellence, offering high-quality learning to a diverse student body from across the globe. Established in 1976, ISK has become one of Kenya’s premier institutions, attracting students from more than 75 countries. Located in Nairobi, the school serves as a platform for students to experience world-class education through a North American and International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum. This educational framework enables students to thrive academically, socially, and personally, setting them up for success in universities around the world.
With a rich history dating back to 1967, the school’s evolution from a small American community school to a prestigious international institution highlights its growth and commitment to providing holistic education. ISK’s diverse curriculum, experienced faculty, and continuous infrastructural development reflect its dedication to fostering an inclusive learning environment that meets the needs of an international community.
History and Evolution of ISK
The journey of the International School of Kenya began in 1967 when Nancy Ellen Crooks founded the American Community School in Nairobi. What started with only 30 students in a home near Nairobi Hospital grew steadily, and in 1970, the school was taken over by the United States International University (USIU) and relocated to its current location. This marked the beginning of significant educational expansion, offering not only primary and secondary education but also university-level courses.
In 1976, the school was renamed the International School of Kenya, officially registering with the Kenya Ministry of Education and offering a Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12 curriculum. The partnership between the United States Embassy and the Canadian High Commission in Kenya was crucial in the school’s governance, ensuring that it remained an international institution catering to the expatriate community.
Since its inception, ISK has been driven by a commitment to academic excellence and the nurturing of a global perspective. The school’s growth and development were further bolstered by the introduction of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma program in 1982, which positioned ISK as a leading provider of globally recognized education.
Curriculum and Academic Excellence
ISK follows a North American-style curriculum, integrated with the International Baccalaureate framework for students in grades 11 and 12. The school prides itself on providing a comprehensive education that prepares students for the challenges of the modern world. The primary language of instruction is English, with world language courses offered in Spanish, French, and Kiswahili. The diversity in language offerings ensures that students are equipped to thrive in a multicultural world.
One of ISK’s hallmark programs is its Life-Centered Education (LCE), launched in 2019. This initiative is specifically designed for students with mild to moderate learning needs, providing tailored educational support to ensure that every student has the opportunity to succeed. The introduction of LCE further highlights ISK’s commitment to inclusivity and supporting students from all backgrounds.
ISK also offers a wide range of extracurricular activities that encourage student engagement outside the classroom. From sports and arts to leadership development programs, the school ensures that its students receive a well-rounded education that goes beyond academics.
Faculty and Learning Environment
At the heart of ISK’s success is its highly qualified faculty. In 2024, the school employed 149 teachers, many of whom have master’s degrees and experience working in international schools across the globe. The school attracts talented educators who are passionate about teaching and dedicated to the academic and personal growth of their students.
The learning environment at ISK is second to none, with modern classrooms, science labs, and state-of-the-art facilities that enable students to explore and innovate. Key developments over the years, such as the Performing Arts Centre in 2000 and the new track-and-field facilities in 2023, showcase the school’s commitment to providing an inspiring environment for students to excel in both academics and extracurricular activities.
School Facilities and Infrastructure
ISK’s campus is a testament to its growth and development. Over the years, the school has built and upgraded numerous facilities to meet the evolving needs of its students. The Commons, a prominent round building in the heart of the campus, serves as a hub for student interaction and school events. The campus also features new elementary classrooms and modernized high school facilities that support a collaborative and creative learning atmosphere.
The swimming pool and the track-and-field facilities are just a few examples of the infrastructure upgrades that have been undertaken to improve the overall student experience. These facilities not only enhance physical education but also provide opportunities for students to engage in competitive sports at a high level.
Financials, Scholarships, and Tuition
Tuition at ISK is considered high, reflective of the premium education it offers. In 2024, the tuition fee for Pre-Kindergarten students was US$18,500 (approximately KSh 2.38 million), with Grades 11-12 tuition reaching US$36,600 (approximately KSh 4.72 million). While the cost of attending ISK is significant, the school offers scholarships based on merit and financial need, particularly for Kenyan students who demonstrate academic excellence.
The school has also faced scrutiny over its taxation issues, including a 1.4 billion Kenyan shillings tax dispute with the Kenya Revenue Authority in 2021 over unpaid taxes on teacher salaries. However, this has not affected the school’s ability to maintain high standards of education and facilities.
Notable Alumni
Over the years, ISK has produced a number of successful alumni who have gone on to make significant contributions in various fields. Notable graduates include Dan Eldon, the English photojournalist, and Karen Graham, a Canadian author and dietitian. These individuals exemplify the caliber of education ISK provides and the global impact that its students continue to have after graduation.
