Beer in Kenya has a rich history, beginning with the establishment of Kenya Breweries Limited (KBL) in 1922 by Charles and George Hurst. The introduction of beer to the country paved the way for the growth of a thriving brewing industry, with notable brands such as Tusker Lager and White Cap Lager becoming household names. Over time, other breweries, such as Keroche Breweries and Big Five Breweries, have emerged, contributing to the country’s diverse beer offerings.

The Birth of Tusker Lager

The history of beer in Kenya is most famously linked to the creation of Tusker Lager. In 1922, Kenya Breweries Limited was founded by Charles and George Hurst, two British entrepreneurs. They brewed their first beer, Tusker Lager, named in memory of George Hurst, who tragically lost his life when he was trampled by a rogue elephant in 1923. The name “Tusker” was chosen to honor this event and has since become synonymous with Kenyan beer.

White Cap Lager

White Cap Lager is another iconic Kenyan beer. This pale lager, produced by East African Breweries Limited (EABL), is characterized by its light, refreshing taste and iconic branding featuring the snow-capped peak of Mount Kenya. White Cap is often regarded as a favorite of many, including former President Mwai Kibaki, who was known for his preference for the brew.

East African Breweries Limited (EABL)

EABL has been a dominant force in the Kenyan brewing industry, with Tusker Lager and White Cap being some of its most well-known products. The brewery is based in Ruaraka, Nairobi, and has built a reputation for brewing high-quality beer using locally sourced ingredients, including barley. EABL’s contribution to the Kenyan beer industry cannot be overstated, as it remains one of the largest and most influential players in the market.

Keroche Breweries and Summit Malt

Keroche Breweries, founded in 1997 and based in Naivasha, has become a major competitor to EABL, offering a range of beers including Summit Malt. Keroche is a significant part of Kenya’s brewing scene, known for its innovation and high-quality brews. The company has made a strong impact by introducing new options to the Kenyan market and supporting local beer culture.

Craft Brewing: Big Five and Sierra Premium

Kenya’s beer market is also home to a growing craft beer scene. Big Five Breweries and Sierra Premium are two notable craft breweries based in Nairobi. These breweries specialize in small-batch, artisanal beer production, offering unique flavors and styles to appeal to discerning beer drinkers. The craft beer movement is gaining momentum, providing consumers with more variety and a broader selection of flavors.

Conclusion

Beer in Kenya has evolved significantly over the years, from the creation of Tusker Lager to the rise of craft breweries. Today, Kenya is home to a diverse range of beers, from mass-produced lagers like Tusker and White Cap to small-batch craft brews. Whether you’re enjoying a Tusker Lager at a local pub or sipping a unique craft beer, Kenya’s beer industry continues to thrive and expand.
