The path to becoming a recognized journalist in Kenya involves formal training, practical experience, and professional accreditation. Whether you’re a student or an intern aspiring to enter the media world, obtaining an accreditation from the Media Council of Kenya (MCK) is essential. The accreditation allows students and interns to gain access to media resources, attend industry workshops, and most importantly, work under the protection and guidance of professional journalism standards.

For students, it is a recognition of their status and skills, confirming that they are on their way to becoming qualified journalists. This process helps streamline entry into the field while ensuring that all journalists, whether seasoned professionals or students, follow ethical and professional guidelines. This article covers the steps involved in obtaining your journalism accreditation in Kenya, with a focus on online and in-person application methods, eligibility criteria, and fees.

Steps to Apply for Journalism Accreditation in Kenya

The Media Council of Kenya provides two main ways to apply for accreditation: online and in-person. Both methods are straightforward, but the online process offers convenience, making it easier for students and interns to apply without having to visit the MCK offices physically.

Online Application Process

Applying for accreditation as a journalism student or intern online is simple and can be done in just a few steps:

  1. Visit the MCK Website:
Begin by visiting the official website of the Media Council of Kenya. On the homepage, scroll down to find the Accreditation Icon and click on it to access the accreditation portal.
  2. Register as a New User:
Once in the accreditation portal, click on the “Journalist” tab, followed by the “Register (New Journalist Only)” option. This will direct you to a form where you’ll need to input your personal details, including:
    • Full names
    • Date of birth
    • Email address
    • Gender
    • Phone number
    • A recent passport-sized photo
    • A secure password
  3. Verification Link:
After submitting your details, a verification link will be sent to your registered email address. You must click this link to activate your account.
  4. Login and Submit Application:
Log in to the portal using your email and password, and navigate to the Membership Request tab. Choose “New Application,” select the Student/Intern category, and complete the required information. Once submitted, your status will show as “Pending Approval.”
  5. Approval and Payment:
Typically, it takes about two days for your application to be reviewed and approved. Once approved, you will receive an email confirming your status, and the portal will update your application status to “Pending Payment.”
  6. Payment:
Follow the instructions provided in the portal to make your payment via M-Pesa. Only pay after receiving confirmation from MCK. After payment, a PDF copy of your Press Card will be available on your account.
  7. Collection of Press Card:
You can collect your physical press card at MCK’s offices in Britam Center, Nairobi. Ensure you provide proof of identification when picking up the card.

In-Person Application Process

If you prefer to apply in person, you can visit the MCK offices for assistance:

  1. Visit MCK Offices:
Head to the MCK offices located at Britam Centre, Upper Hill, Nairobi. You will be given an application form to fill out.
  2. Submit Documents:
Along with the application form, ensure you attach the following documents:
    • A letter from your training institution confirming your internship
    • A valid student ID
    • A clear passport-sized photograph
  3. Make Payment:
Pay the accreditation fees and submit the receipt to the MCK offices for processing. Accreditation is typically completed within seven days.
  4. Press Card Collection:
Once the accreditation process is complete, you will be contacted by MCK to collect your press card in person.

Eligibility for Journalism Accreditation

To qualify for MCK accreditation, students must be enrolled in accredited institutions and be in their final phase of training. Specifically, students in their 3rd or 4th year of undergraduate studies or 3rd-year diploma students are eligible to apply for internship accreditation.
