Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi has sparked fresh debate within the Orange Democratic Movement after insisting that the party must field a presidential candidate in the next general election. His remarks come amid growing speculation that ODM could back President William Ruto following the formation of a broad-based government.

Speaking on the future of the party after the death of longtime leader Raila Odinga, Osotsi argued that ODM remains a strong political force with enough leadership depth to contest the presidency. He rejected suggestions that the party should abandon its ambitions, stating that such a move would undermine ODM’s identity and legacy.

The senator framed his position as a continuation of Raila Odinga’s long-held vision for the party. He stressed that ODM was never meant to exist as a supporting outfit and warned that failing to present an ODM presidential candidate would weaken internal morale and public confidence.

Osotsi Insists ODM Presidential Candidate Is Non-Negotiable

According to Osotsi, the idea that ODM should rally behind another candidate was challenged directly by Raila Odinga before his death. He recalled a meeting of ODM Members of Parliament along Mombasa Road where the former prime minister questioned claims that the party would not contest the presidency.

Osotsi quoted Raila as asking who had decided that ODM would support someone else and who had declared that the party would not field a candidate. For the senator, that message remains binding even after Raila’s passing. He said honoring that position is essential to preserving ODM’s political relevance.

The lawmaker dismissed arguments that ODM lacks a credible presidential contender. Instead, he pointed to several leaders within the party whom he believes are capable of mounting a serious national campaign.

ODM Leadership and Succession Debate

Osotsi named himself, Siaya Governor James Orengo, and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino as examples of leaders who could step forward. He argued that ODM’s strength lies in its diversity and the breadth of experience among its members.

He emphasized that leadership renewal should not be feared but embraced. In his view, presenting a presidential candidate would allow ODM to shape national discourse and negotiate from a position of strength, regardless of the final electoral outcome.

The senator added that the party’s grassroots supporters expect ODM to compete, not retreat. He warned that ignoring this expectation could alienate loyal voters and weaken party structures across the country.

Raila-Ruto Deal and Unresolved Issues

Osotsi also referenced the 10-point agenda signed between Raila Odinga and President William Ruto during the formation of the broad-based government. He said several key issues in that agreement remain unresolved and cannot simply be brushed aside.

Among the concerns he raised were electoral justice and police accountability. Osotsi demanded compensation for families of young protesters killed by police and called for prosecution of officers implicated in the deaths.

He further insisted that the truth surrounding the last general election must be made public. According to him, transparency on these matters is critical if ODM is to maintain credibility among its supporters.

Osotsi Urges Oburu Oginga to Listen

In a direct message to ODM party leader Oburu Oginga, Osotsi urged the current leadership to adopt a more consultative approach. He said Raila Odinga was known for listening to party members, especially during moments of disagreement.

Osotsi cautioned that sidelining grassroots voices could trigger internal divisions. He stressed that while he has no personal issue with Oburu, leadership requires openness and dialogue to keep the party united.

He warned that ignoring dissenting views risks destroying the party from within, noting that internal democracy has always been one of ODM’s defining strengths.

Call for Unity Ahead of Elections

The senator concluded by emphasizing the importance of unity between the Luhya and Luo communities. He described their cooperation as essential for ODM’s strength and electoral success.

As the debate over an ODM presidential candidate continues, Osotsi’s remarks signal that internal discussions are far from settled. His call reflects a broader struggle within the party over direction, leadership, and strategy as the next election cycle approaches.
