Nakivubo Channel redevelopment works are beginning to take clear shape, marking a major milestone in Kampala’s long-running effort to address flooding and drainage challenges in the city centre. New photos released by businessman Hamis Kiggundu show visible progress on the project, particularly the ongoing covering of the channel.

The redevelopment focuses on transforming the once open drainage system into a modern, enclosed channel designed to safely handle large volumes of storm water. According to images shared from the site, construction teams are advancing steadily, with structural works now well underway.

Recent improvements include the opening of additional culverts to divert excess surface water into the channel during heavy rainfall. These measures are intended to reduce flooding in surrounding commercial areas, which have frequently been affected during intense storms.

Kiggundu has stated that he is open to working closely with engineers and city authorities to ensure the project meets long-term technical standards. He noted that professional guidance is essential to preventing future drainage failures and ensuring the channel performs effectively for decades.

One of the most significant changes is the widening of the channel. While Nakivubo Channel was previously six metres wide, the redevelopment has expanded it to 12 metres. Engineers involved in the project estimate that the upgraded structure will adequately manage water flow for the next 50 to 70 years.

The project also addresses long-standing safety and environmental concerns. When the channel was open, it posed risks to pedestrians and nearby businesses, while indiscriminate dumping of rubbish often led to blockages. Covering the channel is expected to improve public safety and reduce maintenance issues caused by waste accumulation.

The redevelopment has additional importance due to its proximity to Nakivubo Stadium. Kiggundu revealed that football inspectors raised concerns about open drainage near the stadium, noting that international standards discourage exposed water and sewerage channels close to major sports facilities. Covering the channel was identified as a necessary step toward meeting those standards.

City authorities, including Kampala Capital City Authority, are expected to play a key role in coordinating surface water management to ensure rainwater flows efficiently into the upgraded channel. Cooperation between private developers and public agencies remains central to the project’s success.

President Yoweri Museveni has previously endorsed the redevelopment plan, describing it as innovative and practical. He explained that Kiggundu was allowed to clean, strengthen, and cover the channel at his own cost, with the option of recovering his investment by developing properties above the covered structure.

The Nakivubo Channel redevelopment represents a broader shift toward integrated urban infrastructure solutions in Kampala. By combining flood control, public safety, and commercial development, the project aims to deliver long-term benefits to the city while addressing one of its most persistent environmental challenges.
