Mount Kenya University (MKU) is a prominent private university in Kenya, located in Thika, about 47 kilometers northeast of Nairobi. Established in 1996 by Prof. Simon N. Gicharu, MKU has grown to become one of the largest private universities in the country. With a vast student population and multiple campuses across Kenya and abroad, MKU has solidified its reputation as a key institution in higher education, offering a wide range of academic programs across various fields of study.

History of Mount Kenya University

Mount Kenya University began as the Thika Institute of Technology in 1996, offering courses primarily in management and computer training. In the same year, the Kenya Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology recognized the institution as a fully-fledged institution of higher learning.

In 2005, MKU became the first privately owned institution in Kenya to receive accreditation from the Pharmacy and Poisons Board of the Ministry of Health, allowing it to train pharmaceutical technologists. This marked a significant milestone for the institution, enhancing its reputation and expanding its academic reach.

By 2006, MKU gained approval from the Commission for Higher Education (CHE) to collaborate with Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), offering both diploma and degree programs. Later, in 2011, the university was granted a charter by the Kenyan government, officially becoming Mount Kenya University, recognized as a full-fledged private university.

In 2023, the university’s former campus in Kigali, Rwanda, gained autonomy and was renamed Mount Kigali University.

Campuses and Locations

The main campus of MKU is situated in Thika, a town that serves as the educational and administrative hub for the institution. Over the years, MKU has expanded its reach, establishing multiple campuses and centers within Kenya and beyond. As of 2024, MKU has 14 campuses and centers, including locations in major cities and neighboring countries such as Rwanda and Uganda.
