Forum for the Restoration of Democracy–Kenya (FORD-Kenya) is a prominent Kenyan political party that has played a significant role in the country’s multi-party political landscape. Founded in 1991, the party has been involved in numerous political developments, including the end of one-party rule in Kenya, the fight for democracy, and several coalition formations. Headed by Moses Wetangula, who currently serves as the Speaker of the National Assembly, FORD-Kenya is one of Kenya’s key political players.

The party’s ideological stance is rooted in social democracy, advocating for inclusive governance, human rights, and economic equality. Over the years, FORD-Kenya has garnered support from a wide array of communities, particularly among the Luhya people. The party has also navigated through various internal challenges, leadership changes, and shifting political alliances to remain relevant in the highly competitive political environment of Kenya.

History of FORD-Kenya

The origins of FORD-Kenya trace back to 1991, when the country was transitioning from a one-party system to a multi-party political system. The Kenya African National Union (KANU), which had ruled the country for four decades, finally agreed to allow other political parties following sustained pressure from international donors and local activists.

In 1991, a coalition of opposition leaders came together to form the Forum for the Restoration of Democracy (FORD). This umbrella group aimed to push for political change in Kenya. The founding leaders of FORD included Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Phillip Gachoka, Ahmed Bamahariz, Salim Ndamwe, Masinde Muliro, and George Nthenge. However, the formation of FORD was met with strong resistance from the Kenyan government, and the party’s leaders were often under surveillance.

In 1992, due to an internal power struggle within the FORD coalition, the party split into two factions: FORD-Asili, led by Kenneth Matiba, and FORD-Kenya, led by Oginga Odinga. The split weakened the opposition, leading to the Kenya African National Union (KANU) retaining power in the 1992 general elections. The FORD-Kenya faction, led by Oginga Odinga, finished third, failing to make significant political gains.

Key Leadership Changes and Challenges

Following the death of Oginga Odinga in 1994, Michael Wamalwa Kijana became the leader of FORD-Kenya. Under his leadership, FORD-Kenya became a more formidable force, attracting several key opposition figures such as James Orengo and Professor Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o. Despite internal divisions, the party continued to advocate for democratic reforms.

The leadership of Raila Odinga, the son of Oginga Odinga, created tensions within the party, and in 1997, a split occurred when Raila Odinga left FORD-Kenya to join the National Development Party of Kenya (NDP). This departure left Michael Wamalwa as the sole leader of FORD-Kenya, which went on to finish fourth in the 1997 general elections.

In 2002, the opposition finally united to form a coalition under the banner of the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC), which led to the election of Mwai Kibaki as president. Michael Wamalwa was appointed as Vice President in the new government. The unity of the opposition allowed Kenya to break the 40-year rule of KANU.

Political Alliances and Coalitions

In 2012, FORD-Kenya joined the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD), an alliance of opposition parties led by Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka. The alliance sought to challenge the ruling Jubilee Party in the 2013 general elections. However, CORD lost the presidential race, with Uhuru Kenyatta of the Jubilee Party winning the presidency.

In 2017, FORD-Kenya, along with several other parties, joined the National Super Alliance (NASA) coalition. Moses Wetangula, the leader of FORD-Kenya, became one of the principal members of NASA, along with Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka, and Musalia Mudavadi. However, NASA’s presidential candidate, Raila Odinga, lost to Uhuru Kenyatta in a contested election. Despite the setback, Wetangula remained influential, serving as the Senate Minority Leader for a brief period.

In 2022, FORD-Kenya joined the Kenya Kwanza coalition, led by William Ruto and other key figures. As a result, Moses Wetangula became one of the co-principals in the coalition, and Kenya Kwanza went on to win the presidency. Wetangula was later appointed as the Speaker of the National Assembly, marking a significant political achievement for FORD-Kenya.

Current Leadership and Key Figures

Today, Moses Wetangula continues to serve as the leader of FORD-Kenya, a position he has held since 2007. Under his leadership, the party has maintained its influence in the political arena, although it has faced internal struggles and competition from other parties. The current leadership structure of FORD-Kenya includes the following key figures:

  • Moses Wetangula – Party Leader
  • Kenneth Makelo Lusaka – 1st Deputy Party Leader
  • Millicent Abudho – 2nd Deputy Party Leader
  • John Chikati – Secretary-General
  • Joel Amuma Ruhu – National Chairperson

Ideology and Key Policies

FORD-Kenya subscribes to a centre-left ideology, advocating for social democracy and inclusive development. The party emphasizes the importance of democracy, human rights, good governance, and economic justice. It has consistently pushed for a decentralized government, better service delivery, and the protection of citizens’ rights.

The party’s agenda includes policies on education, healthcare, infrastructure development, and the empowerment of marginalized communities. FORD-Kenya remains committed to the devolution of power, ensuring that resources are more equitably distributed across Kenya’s counties.

Conclusion

The Forum for the Restoration of Democracy–Kenya (FORD-Kenya) has played an important role in shaping the country’s political landscape since its inception in 1991. From its involvement in Kenya’s multi-party democracy to its participation in various coalitions, the party has been at the forefront of Kenya’s political transformation. With Moses Wetangula leading the party into the Kenya Kwanza coalition, FORD-Kenya continues to hold a significant place in Kenya’s political future.
