The History of the Jews in Kenya dates back to 1899, when a Jewish businessman, J. Marcus, moved from India to Nairobi and established an export business for local produce. This marked the beginning of Jewish settlement in Kenya, which would gradually grow and evolve over the next century.

The arrival of Marcus was part of a larger movement of Jewish migration during this period, primarily from India and Europe, seeking new opportunities in East Africa. His establishment of a business in Nairobi laid the foundation for what would become a small but influential Jewish community in the region.

The Uganda Program and Its Impact on Kenyan Jews

In 1903, during the height of British colonial rule, a proposal known as the Uganda Program was introduced at the Sixth Zionist Congress. This plan, proposed by British Colonial Secretary Joseph Chamberlain, suggested offering part of the territories of Kenya and Uganda as a homeland for the Jewish people. This proposal, however, was met with controversy within the international Jewish community and was rejected at the Seventh Zionist Congress in 1905.

Although the Uganda Program was ultimately shelved, it played a pivotal role in shaping the Jewish presence in the region. By 1913, around 20 Jewish families had settled in Kenya, with most of them living in Nairobi. During this time, the community also established a Jewish cemetery in 1907 and constructed the first synagogue in 1913.

Growth of the Jewish Community During World War II

The outbreak of World War II and the tragic events of the Holocaust had a profound effect on Jewish communities worldwide, including in Kenya. As Jewish refugees fled Europe, the number of Jews in Kenya rose significantly. By the end of the war, Kenya’s Jewish population had reached approximately 1,200 individuals.

This period also marked a crucial point in the community’s involvement in broader historical events. Many Kenyan Jews supported the Irgun and Lehi fighters, groups involved in the struggle for an independent Israel. The support of these fighters, particularly when they were imprisoned by the British in Gilgil, solidified the bond between Kenyan Jews and the growing Zionist movement.

The Establishment of the State of Israel and the Exodus

The establishment of the State of Israel in 1948 had a significant impact on the Jewish community in Kenya. Following Israel’s founding, many Kenyan Jews made the decision to move to Israel, seeking to contribute to the new Jewish state. This marked a period of emigration for many Jews in Kenya, although a small community remained in the country.

By 1963, when Kenya gained independence, the Jewish population had declined further. The Jewish presence in Kenya transitioned from a largely permanent community to one made up primarily of expatriates on business contracts or long-term assignments.

The Decline of the Jewish Population and Modern Developments

Following Kenya’s independence, the Jewish population continued to decrease. By 2011, it was estimated that 80% of the Jewish expatriates in Kenya were Israeli. The community had shifted from a permanent presence to a more transient one, with many Jewish individuals coming to Kenya for business, diplomatic, or humanitarian purposes.

In 2013, the Jewish community in Kenya was estimated to be around 600 members. Despite the decline in numbers, the community has remained active, especially in the Nairobi Hebrew Congregation, which continues to serve as a center for Jewish worship and community life in Kenya.

The Kasuku Gathundia Jewish Community

In addition to the expatriate Jewish community, a unique and growing community of Jewish converts has emerged in Kenya. The Kasuku Gathundia Jewish community, a Kikuyu-speaking group of 60 members, is based in the Kenyan highlands, near Nyahururu. The community was founded after a split with Kenya’s larger Messianic Jewish congregation. The patriarch of the group, Yosef Ben Avraham Njogu, and fellow member Avraham Ndungu Mbugua began their journey into Judaism after realizing that their practices differed from those of the Messianic Jewish faith.

The community is primarily comprised of subsistence farmers who have embraced Jewish traditions, including circumcision, which is performed by the Abayudaya in Uganda due to legal restrictions in Kenya. This group’s growing involvement in Jewish traditions has attracted attention both within Kenya and the broader Jewish world.

The Future of the Jewish Community in Kenya

The future of the Jewish community in Kenya remains uncertain. While the number of Jewish residents in Kenya has decreased significantly over the years, the community continues to make contributions to the social, cultural, and economic landscape of the country. The presence of Jewish organizations, such as the Nairobi Hebrew Congregation, and the rise of communities like the Kasuku Gathundia Jewish community indicate that Judaism will continue to have a presence in Kenya for years to come.

Conclusion

The History of the Jews in Kenya is a testament to the resilience and adaptability of the Jewish people. From their humble beginnings in the late 19th century to their significant contributions during World War II and the establishment of Israel, Kenyan Jews have played an important role in the country’s history. While the community has undergone many changes over the years, including a shift from permanent residents to expatriates, it continues to maintain a strong presence, contributing to Kenya’s diverse cultural fabric.
