Military Engagement

  • October 16: Kenyan Defense Forces (KDF) entered southern Somalia in Operation Linda Nchi, aimed at securing the Kenyan border from Al-Shabaab militants. The operation lasted until May 31, 2012.

Sports Achievements

  • March 6: Kenya emerged victorious at the 2011 African Cross Country Championships in Cape Town, with John Mwangangi and Mercy Cherono winning the men’s and women’s titles.
  • September 25: Patrick Makau set a new Marathon World Record at the Berlin Marathon, while Florence Kiplagat won the women’s race.

Losses

2011 saw the untimely deaths of several influential figures:

  • January 1: Musician Lessa Lassan passed away.
  • March 12: Politician Paul Kiptoo arap Koech died.
